This workshop offers a comprehensive look at the hospice model of care and how massage therapy can be integrated into its interdisciplinary team approach. A thorough discussion of the unique psychosocial issues that accompany the dying process will be presented to help the massage therapist better understand how to connect with someone at end of life.

 Areas of Concentration:

  • Common pathologies, contraindications and precautions found in the hospice environment
  • How to safely work around ports, catheters, and IV's
  • How to move, bolster and support the patient for maximum comfort
  • Basic massage techniques that can be modified when working with people at end of life
  • Specific techniques to use for pain, depression and anxiety
  • Issues specific to the massage therapist who works with people at end of life
  • Research showing the efficacy of massage in relieving pain, anxiety and depression at end  of life

Certification in Massage at End of Life:

Those wanting to become certified in Massage at End of Life must complete 6 hours of supervised massage at a local hospice in Chattanooga, TN and volunteer 10 hours of  massage at a hospice of their choosing. An additional 6 CE hours will be earned with the Certification.

Prerequisite(s): None

Participants: 6 minimum / 10 maximum

What to bring / wear: Wear comfortable clothing. Bring lotion , set of sheets and a pillow.
