February 2017 Meeting News

VERY IMPORTANT!  Changes to our rules were made by the Licensing Board last year but the TN Legislature must vote to approve these changes. It can take up to 9 months for the legislature to vote on these! So we are still under the current TN rules and regs meaning we still need 25 CE hours for the current cycle.

  • A fee reduction for both massage and establishment licenses is under consideration. A report on the impact will be given at the May Board meeting.
  • A lenghty discussion was had regarding the qualification of those who teach TN law continuing education. A new policy is being written that will require law teachers to use the syllabus generated by the Law and Ethics Curriculum Task Forth..Teachers will also be required to attend 50% of the Board Meetings each cycle. This policy should make its way to the Board web page by next week. Discussion on this matter will continue at the May board mtg. to consider how to make sure therapists get the info they need from the class.
  • We are down to only auditing 10% of LMTs now. Between January and June of last year 25% of therapists audited were non compliant.
  • A lively and lenghty discussion was had about how the state defines massage. This will also be continued at the next meeting. It was said that simply placing your hands on a body constitutes massage. A discussion then ensued about yoga teachers, personal trainers, etc. Some were concerned that  our definition of massage was too broad.

PLEASE, IF YOU HAVE ANY THOUGHTS ABOUT THE ABOVE, OR ANYTHING REGARDING OUR LAW, LET THE BOARD KNOW. YOU DO NOT NEED ATTEND A MEETING TO SHARE. YOU CAN EMAIL YOUR COMMENTS AND THEY WILL BE READ AT THE BOARD MEETING.
